we're hearing mitt romney has been rehearsing zingers. the president has been rehearsing delivering shorter answers in this debate. what does each man need to do to convince the american public he's the right man for the job. let's start with president obama. >> president obama needs to just look presidential, not look flustered, not give any lines like hillary, you're likeable enough which seemed to demonstrate a certain arrogance or smugness or putting down anybody else. mitt romney has to be aggressive and has to make points and has to come off as knowledgeable, supposedly in 1994 he doesn't do well with followup questions because he feels he's already given an answer. that was when he was debating ted kennedy. it's everything for romney to gain by doing well and obama just needs to be steady and look, as i said, presidential and not make any mistakes and not have romney get under his skin and say something which demonstrates that obama is flustered in any way. >> it's been a while since the president has had a debate like this. do you

yesterday, showing romney down 8. ohio has been a problem for romney since the primaries when of all the midwestern states it with us the closest one where rick santorum nearly pulled off an upset. it's certainly the toughest in the badleground. the problem for romney is if he concedes ohio to obama, the president is simile one state away from a win. it's not a florida or virginia. he's a wisconsin away, a nevada away. that's the real problem here. the romney campaign needs ohio back. like this line yesterday, they tried to hammer obama on taxes. take a listen. >> he's got one new idea. i admit this. he has one thing he did not do in his first four years he said he's going to do in the next four years which is to raise taxes. is there anybody who thinks raising taxes will help grow the economy? >> no. >> ryan's expression back there when he looks over at portman, kind of intriguing. it would be curious what a thought bubble would be going on over there. but it's a little bit of a change for romney. he had often been a

also 22 for romney. what it means is that the idea that obama could get 80% of the minority again it's actually quite plausible based on this and other data. that looks like what it's going to get to. if he doesn't get 80, he will get 7 meters 79. as you can see by the right-hand figures, obama is actually doing better -- which is actually somewhat better than he did in 2000 and one he lost them by 18 points. remember what we said about the outlandishly large margin that mitt romney needs to be with white working-class voters. he is not anywhere close. that is the bottom line. this is true across many polls. you might see a margin of 20 points for mitt romney or a margin of 22 points. nowhere do you see the outside margin that he really needs to win the election. given how he appears to be holding support and then some of college graduate voters so that is where we are now in the national picture. as we know, these elections that we choose to have in the united states are not decided by the popular vote.

romney's 47% remark. you're probably not going to want to hear this, rich, but let's play it. >> [ inaudible ] they believe they are victims. they believe the government has the responsibility to care for them. who believe that they're entitled to health care, food, housing, you name it. and they will vote for this president no matter what. so my job is not to worry about those people. >> i got to tell you, we've tossed this around with my production team. and there are few who don't think that this is one of the most damning ads out there. this is one that's going to stick around. how in the world? because you put these words to faces. rich, how does the romney camp counter this? >> i think you can't. you can't counter it. you just have to try to change the discussion. i mean, four years ago when the president then senator obama made that bone-headed remark about pennsylvanians he went on to win pennsylvania in the general election. so these things have sort of a half life. and we'll see whether it still
